My daughters and I tried the English Rose which is about an hour and half from us. The atmosphere was beautiful and the service was great. Loved that we could select hats to wear. Their sandwiches were good. Their scones were average and not creative in our opinion. The parfait didn't have much flavor at all.

Since we have relocated to Sun City West, AZ, the English Rose Tearoom has become our “special” place to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries. We have never been disappointed with the food, service, or teas. A true delightful place.

Excellent tea and food. I prefer it post-covid. The dining room isn't nearly as crowded/cluttered. Before all the tables were pushed together, it was hard to maneuver around. Now it looks much more open. I really like the salmon quiche. The tomato basil soup special is also fantastic.

Without question the best tearoom this side of the Atlantic. Everything is authentic English from the scones to the accent of the owner. The tea is steeped to perfection with lots of choices. The food is excellent and the shop items are unique. There’s always something of interest to keep us coming back for more. It’s a must stop place and well worth a distant drive for those of us not living up north.

Worth the drive from anywhere in the Valley! Perfect place to take anyone for tea! One of the most adorable places I've visited - everything is done in a top notch way. I recommend making a reservation - it's a small space - but that only adds to the ambiance!

It's a little out of the way for me, but the tea is great! I wish I could buy a box of scones and clotted cream for me to take home!

I came across your tea room in the Carefree magazine/newspaper we picked up in Quartzsite this year and upon getting back to Phoenix where two of my friends lived we decided to make reservations for a tea. Food was great and everything else great. We thoroughly enjoyed our day at your tea room. Service was great also.

i came here with my girlfriend and family over the weekend when we walked in and were finally seated we were jammed close to two other tables like sardines like another person noted in there review, although the décor was nice and welcoming the service and food was far from it, a couple of our strainers on the table were very dirty, so I then asked the waiter if we could get new ones as he took them from our table he never came back we then asked another waitress to bring us new strainers and she came back with both of the dirty ones that we had just given back as if they just put them back in there clean utensils. the scones were very large which was a good thing although they lacked any flavor at all scones are supposed to be sweet from my tea experience and they were more like hard biscuits!!?? also other than the waitress bringing us back our dirty strainers our server never came back to our tables to refill our Ice water nor hot tea me and my family have gone to tea rooms all over az and other states and this was by far the worst one yet!! I am very confused as to how this tea room is number one in Arizona, I also am now reading other reviewers that have had a lot of the same issues we shared over this weekend. would not go back nor recommend to others buyer beware!!

We had a lovely time at the tearoom. What a cute place. When traveling we always look for tearooms to visit and were not disappointed with the English Rose.

Note to other reviewers, the Tea Room is fabulous but be careful when posting a review via an IPad...teamap says the review is not submitted, then next thing you know it appears 5 times! Sorry ladies at the English Rose, didn't mean to over indulge you all...but anyway, we did have a great time there!

Excellent as always. Jo you and your staff always make my family so welcome, just like the other reviewer we have been coming to the English Rose for many years, and we LOVE it! Scones are enormous and so delicious, service as always is attentive and prompt...for a busy little Tea Room you do a first class job! Jenna Wilcox.

I was excited to visit the tea room but, alas, was very disappointed. The scones were cold and tasteless, the quiche looked a tasted 'not fresh', the 'salad' was warm, wilted lettuce straight from the plastic bag. The room was incredibly small and we were crammed in like sardines. This is a sad excuse for an 'English Tea Room'.

Whenever my granddaughter is home from college she always wants to go to the English Rose. We have always enjoyed their wonderful tea and lunch. They have never disappointed us. We took a guest with us and he said it was some of the best food he had ever had the pleasure of eating. We had the quiche. Quiche is one of my favorite foods and this was one of the best I have ever had. The salad was fresh and the service was very good. We had tea which was loose leaf, just the right served with sugar lumps and milk. The taste and temp. was perfect. We all enjoyed trying on the hats which has become a tradition. The whole experience was wonderful as always. I highly recommend visiting this tea room if you are in the area. It will not disappoint you.

Mixed up teas between myself and guest. Scones were almost cold, Sandwiches still had crusts on them and were merely cut into triangles. Patries: (i.e., eclairs, minicupcakes, tricolor pastries were all frozen- NOT FRESH nor made with quality ingrediants. Portions were small- I had to order a chicken salad plate for my guest. At $25.00 per person for tea- it is extremely pricey for the substandard quality in food, preparation and service. Awful, Awful. Stay home and make yourself a nice pot of tea and pull out some oreas- it'll be a LOT more satisfying and less disappointing

Found this gem on vacation, best along my route by far. Lovely, friendly hostess, a wide selection of imported tea on the menu and in the shop, and a great teacup o'oup and layered sandwich combo.

I was born in the UK, and well able to know what an authentic scone is! Unfortunately those served do not fall into that category. Overly large dry lumps of some kind of American dough! Delightful place, delightful owner and staff, but a little disappointing...need my scone recipe?

Oh my, the owner was very rude and she rushed us to order. She even said ' surely you know what you want, you have been here for a half hour' Is that how you treat customers? I will never go back there(that was my 2nd time, and planned to continue to go)and I am telling alot of my friends who love to go to tea houses.

Was in this past weekend with my two sisters. One had never been to tea so I as treating them. Food and service were good. However, we were most disappointed that we were rushed out of the place in one hour. We drove 1.5 hours to get there and were hoping for a nice afternoon respite and time to chat. Busy Saturday afternoon at the tea room but one should never feel rushed when taking tea. Disappointed 😢

Me and my mother, who was raised in London, had a lovely time at The English Rose in Carefree. The food was wonderful and delicious and the tea (we tried the Darjeeling) was flavorful and the best I have ever had at a tearoom. We will be coming here again very soon. Thanks Jo!

My husband, mother and I were to afternoon tea recently at the English Rose Tearoon. We had delicious food and tea and perhaps the best service we have ever had at a tearoom. Our server was delightful. She expressed herself beautifully and let us know in every way she was pleased to be there and help us in whatever way she possibly could. She made us feel very pampered and special. The tearoom is lovely and decorated sweetly. We loved the experience!

I had out-of-state company and wanted to treat them to something special. Well, we got more than we expected! The Afternoon Tea experience was amazing. All of our senses were affected - our eyes took in the beautiful room, we smelled wonderful aromas, we tasted the most delicious foods, we felt the texture of china, we heard the most delightful English accents. It was a memory in the making. Thank you!

So enjoyed my first 'escape'to the English Rose Tea Room! The decor was so lovely and feminine and dazzling; 'eye candy' here, there and everywhere! Food and service were wonderful and I appreciated tea leaves, not bags. The food selection was so varied---something for everyone's taste. The waitresses were very friendly and looked so pretty in their aprons. Thank you so much for creating my new favorite destination!

The English Rose Tearoom is actually beyond 'excellent' in all four categories listed. And, it is consistently that way over the years that I have visited at different times of day, different seasons, with or without guests. The owner has imbued the well-trained staff with her own standards of excellence as well. Everyone should share the experience.

This charming tea room is the highlight of any visit to Carefree, AZ. The charm oozes from the intimate setting. The service is outstanding with everyone taking great care to see that everyone has just what they need. The food is superb! I love trying a different tea each time I go. And the array of hats to wear make it an event to remember! I'd attach photos if it were an option on this site!

Fabulous, fabulous, fabulous!!! What more can I say. The ambience is wonderful, food outstanding, service impeccible, and the tea (loose leaf) is served in antique pots by servers dressed in authentic Victorian garb. The whole experience is simply lovely!!

If there was a rating higher than excellent - it would be reserved for this lovely tearoom on Easy Street in Carefree, AZ . Whether for tea, high tea or lunch, this charming spot with its fabulous and authentic English décor is a perfect respite from the hectic pace of our world. From the ambiance, to the lovely and spirited proprietor, to the excellent service, and the best scones outside of The Cotswolds – worth the drive no matter where you travel from!

We felt like we were getting away to England for our ladies' luncheon. The atmosphere, food, accommodating owner and staff were absolutely delightful. We also had fun shopping at the gift shop and even had our fortunes read with a tea leaf reading. Thank you English Rose Tea Room for the fun and memorable experience.

My parents emmigrated from Great Britain and I'm an Anglophile. I have often traveled to Britain. Now that I am older and traveling is more difficult for me, The English Rose Tea Room provides my 'Brit fix'.

Wonderful food and tea (although I adore the hot chocolate too) in an eclectic Victorian atmosphere. And there are lots of neat tea items for sale. My Mom collects English tea pots, and the English Rose Tea Room has never disappointed when I'm shopping for her. Mom goes wild in there! During the Christmas season, they also sell unique and gorgeous Christmas decorations. I am NOT domestic, and my friends refer to me as The Restaurant Queen. The Tea Room is one of my favorites! Jo Gemmill, the owner, is a gem, as is her establishment. A must for tea lovers.

Eating at English Rose Tea Room is a wonderful experience!!!! Great atmosphere, fresh, well prepared food, fun and efficient staff and of course a variety of teas.

I love the Tearoom. It is a pleasant step back in time where one can enjoy the finer things in life like a good cup of tea in a lovely bone china teacup and indulge in the pleasure of simply embracing a friends company....no computers or cell phones please! It is a fine place for festivities for any celebration whether greeting a guest from out of town and catching up or honoring a bride to be.
The food is high quality and home made.
Service is always friendly and patrons are considered guests rather than customers. One can dress for a formal affair and enjoy a hat....which if you forgot your own there is a trunk of great finds that is sure to make your photo taking memorable! Casual folks are treated like royalty too. No snobbery in this establishment. Take time to smell the roses in the English Rose Tearoom and it will become a ritual.

The English Rose Team Room in Carefree, Arizona is a charming place to meet with friends or family, have lunch and enjoy a special cup of tea. The interior is so inviting, and the unique china teapots and cups add to the experience. The servers are very pleasant and accommodating, and the gift shop is like going on a treasure hunt. All in all, hats off - or on - for English Rose Tea Room. It has everything you'd want for a special occasion or for a casual get-together.

With a fabulous variety of teas to chose from and delicious freshly baked scones, The English Rose Tearoom is a place my family and I would go to a second time. With exceptional and personable service, our waitress made our dining experience wonderful. The ambience of the tearoom is very comfortable and and provides a scenic escape from modern life.

Our little party of 4 visited the tearoom this week and had a very enjoyable time. The Scones and Devonshire crème were delectable, as were our selection of teas. All teas came loose leaf and we chose three different types: Paris, Vanilla Black, and Lavender Earl Grey. I also loved the Victorian/ cottage feel of the tearoom. The only disappointing part of the whole visit was when the owner came by our table and asked my son to stop playing with a little toy that she felt was too loud. It was unfortunate. For a two year old to do as well as he did was amazing, and he even had compliments from the waitress and a couple of guests dining at the same time. My only supposition must be that the tea room is not as welcoming to children as was originally thought.

My mother, daughter, and I visited the tea room for a 'girls day'. The staff was very friendly and the Nursery Tea is a great selection and a great idea for the little ones to enjoy the experience. However, the adult tea left us dissapointed. The desserts were neither creative, did not seem fresh, and were just not good. The scones were pretty good, however we were told they were out of devonshire cream and would recieve whipped cream. Not the same thing at all and the portion of cream and jam to the great size of the scone left us dissapointed. The sandwhiches were nothing to rave about, we actually ended up leaving dissapointed and hungry. The tea selection was large, creative, and was good quality. Overall, the service was great, as was the ambiance. But don't we all go to tea for great ambiance AND great food?

The English Rose Tea Room is simply the very best I have visited since leaving England in 1993. Having worked in the restaurant trade most of my working life in management I would like to offer my commments.
My party chose a wide selection of goodies from the tradition English afternoon tea, a Nursery Tea, homemade mushroom soup with scone and for my husband a traditional 'ploughman's lunch' including Branston Pickle and pickled onions. This was such a treat for him. The food and presentation was impeccible, even with fine bone china, linen and decent cutlery!. My Darjeeling tea was simply delicious and I seemed to have a bottomless teapot. It was a truly lovely experience and I recommend this tea room very highly. Ms. Joanne is originally from Hampshire, England and has gone out of her way to make sure that the English experience is totally authentic in every way.

I had been here 2 years ago and had a great experience but today, there was nothing spectacular except the dessert's presentation. I'm not sure what changed, but having been to many tea houses, I guess I expected more. The waitress however was very nice and did her job well. The place was crowded and we had to almost yell across the table. Not 'the experience' of an elegant tea parlour.

My four girls and I were visiting Carefree AZ and stumbled into this adorable place. We were seated by this lovely girl who assured us we would enjoy our time, from which we did indeed. After ordering the Afternoon tea, our waitress, a stunning Russian lady, explained every item of the very impressive three-tiered tea down to the preserves and whipped cream. The scones were so delicious and the service was the best I have ever had. My girls had many questions about the tea and the server and young girl who sat us (the hostess?) knew an incredible amount about the different teas. I learned a lot about the difference between white and green teas, and subsequently bought quite a lot of tea to enjoy back in Malibu. Ironically the hostess is living in Malibu for school I enjoyed her so much I gave her my card so we can chat about tea in Malibu, I hope to see her soon. The tearoom itself was simply astonishing, it is decorated so delicately and matches what I feel is a dream world come true. I wish I had known about his earlier in my trip, but I do plan on coming back every year. My girls and I would recommend this to anyone!!! Tea lovers this is a must!!!!!!

My husband and I enjoyed the full afternoon tea at the English Rose, sitting outside and enjoying the ambience of the small town of Carefree, seemingly a long way from anywhere. The owner is English, which is very evident from the decor, which included a picture of Her Majesty in the 'powder room' and pictures from Hampshire, Joanne's home county.
I have to agree with the other comments; the scones were delicious -very light and fluffy and obviously home made. My tea was also very good, a new one recommeded by our server and called Lemon Solstice. They serve loose tea with a tea strainer, so I could see the huge pieces of lemongrass and aniseed.
The owner was extremely friendly and very British! My husband was happy to have a non-tea alternative, Ribena. This is a typical English fruit cordial (we are both Brits too, and enjoyed the atmosphere tremendously. We did find it a bit odd experiencing a taste of Britain surrounded by cactus!) A highly recommendable experience, and the town has a charm all its own too, so plenty of shopping after tea!

I must say that on any review I do I put the English Rose Tea Room on the top of my list next to the Phoenician and my new discovery Tea Dreams. I must say the sandwiches are wonderful and so are the tea selections but this tea room excels when it comes to those wonderful scones!!!! I wish they would sell them frozen for me to bake up fresh at home. The only things I do not like about the tea room are that there are too many tables in the dining room, the desserts are not exciting and I usually get a tea cup that my finger can't fit through. I go to tea about once a week at various places throughout the valley and I sometimes I have to check everyones cup to see if there is one I can fit my finger through on the handle. Some ladies may not have this problem but as a guy this is something I always battle with... comfort in a tea room. I must say one more time.... THE SCONES ARE AMAZING!!!

My mom and I LOVE tea, so I did a little research and took her to the English Rose for her birthday! Although the hostess was quite busy answering the phones, she greated us warmly and sat us quickly. We sat at a cute little table, and we were amazed by our surroundings... it is such a cute little place! But there was a large party next to us so it was quite loud! We didn't even know there was music playing til that group left. Our waitress, sorry I don't remember her name, was very friendly, patient and attentive. I ordered the vanilla tea (AMAZING!) and my mom had a green tea (good as well). We ordered the traditional afternoon tea meal and it was all great! The vanilla scones were to die for! We had a lovely time... but felt a bit ignored when the owner walked around to every table BUT ours to ask how everything was. Never the less, we will return because we enjoyed the atmosphere and the TEA! We both brought a box home with us!

I surprised my mother in law with a reservation of afternoon tea at this lovely tea room for Christmas. We were greeted by name and we were seated promptly. The tea room that day was quite full (the middle of the holiday) but the service was uncompromised! I had the holiday tea, a black tea with orange and cinamon, yum! I bought some to take home with me to California. The food was excellent, sandwiches, scones, and sweet desserts. We couldn't finish it all, but were happy to take it home. I look forward to returning when we visit again! Thank you Jo and Fara!

Hello fellow tea lovers!
I am writing to describe my superb experience at the English Rose Tea Room in Cave Creek Arizona. Having never been there before and being a tea enthusiast, my expectations were a bit “queasy.” However after talking to a lovely young girl named Cari, she informed me that my insecurities would soon vanish. And so they did. Walking in the tea room I was greeted by both the hostess and the girl Cari. Though Cari seemed very busy she dropped everything and thus sat me. The table was small for three people but still lovely. The tables were decorated with antique cards and lace and everything seemed clean and dainty. Cari served us with excellence while maintaining the very crowded desk-area. Though obviously busy none of the staff seemed a bit stressed and ALL were very helpful and caring. One of my guests was elderly and needed assistance to her table from which I was planning on giving myself. To my surprise Cari and the hostess provided two strong arms and helped my elderly guest to and from her table and even to get a vintage hat! Guests of ALL ages have to see the hat room it is very fun. The food was flavorful and the servings appropriate. The tea was very good, I branched out an tried the “paris” tea from which I was much pleased with. The tea room itself was adorable and the service was the best I have had yet. Fellow tea lovers this is a MUST

Unfortunately, the AC was out and it was VERY hot inside. Tea was excellent, however, food was ho-hum. What they call scones seem more like English crumpets to me.

I 'take myself' here once a year for lunch and am always enchanted. I sit on the delightful patio with a good book and have enjoyed a wonderful Darjeeling tea with my Ploughman's Lunch or quiche, soup, and of course scrumptious scones. The salads are always fresh and light. All accompanied by friendly, warm service. I need to go more than once each year!

This tea room and store is amazing!
I have enjoyed many a tea and must say that your Afternoon Tea has set the bar for any future tea experiences. Unfortunately, I don't know when I'll get back to your tea room but, I purchased a few trinkets from your store in 2005 and enjoy them everytime I serve tea...which is almost daily. Best of luck in your business!

could you ever imagine coming to Arizona and finding tucked away a truly magical place like fairy land my eyes could not stop looking I felt like a child again especially when I met the owner who was like mary poppins and this was all before we tasted the delicious food and hot scones and cream and jam and of course real English tea.We then went to the shop next door which was full of wonderfull gifts, the only sad part was having to leave and on my return home to England I will look for something so special, but I bet I never find it.

The good news is that this tea room, now in its third year, is going to stay open all summer long. They have added a big gift shop and have wonderful patio seating. Very authentic English by a very authentic English owner.

I had never been to a tearoom before. This was my first time. I decided to bring my Mother & Sister who were in visiting from New York. We were all blown away with the adorable venue. The service was friendly and made us feel at home. The food was unexpectedly delicious. The atmosphere was exceptionally whimsical as there was live music, violins playing in the tearoom. Our experience here was talked about for days and I believe the highlight of Mom & Sis's visit to AZ. My mother will be back to visit me in February 2007 and we will be sure to make another reservation at the English Rose, possibly an event that must take place everytime Mother is in town. Thank you English Rose for an enjoyable afternoon.

A favorite find of my mother, my sister, and myself. We had to share this treasure with our British friends while they visited (my father even joined us). Our friends were most impressed, and truly enjoyed our afternoon tea. Thank you for helping to create such a glorious memory.

The English Rose is a splendid find! Nestled in a charming Carefree corner, it is picturesque, both inside and out! Even the powder room is well decorated! The staff is gracious and helpful, going so far as to give directions via cell phone to our lost companion. The owner's sense of style permeates the Tea Room and the adjacent shop, making both a feast for the eyes. We enjoyed their full tea, which was excellent. One of our party has a nut allergy, and the owner, herself, made sure that a separate plate of sandwiches and fruit was provided to ensure that there was no chance of an allergic reaction. The only small disappointment was the lack of traditional lemon curd, but the creativity and scrumptiousness of the deserts more than made up for its absence. And when the three of us sat chatting long past the time of our last bite, the ladies continued to be accommodating, offering more tea and ice water. Finally, we made our way to the adjacent shop, which has the same owner, and we were delighted by the cheerful staff and the unique offering of decorator items for the home. All in all, it was an experience well-worth the one hour drive. We’ll definitely return in October, after their two month summer hiatus. We can’t wait to see what the owner brings back to the shop from this trip to her native England!

My 21-month-old daughter and I love to visit the English Rose Tea Room! We also love to get neighbors together for lunch there. It's an absolutely charming place to go for a relaxing lunch. The tea is good too. Having tea is a nice tradition to start with my daughter.

I have been visiting 'The English Rose Teahouse' for over 3 years. Perhaps more for my memory is poor! The best tea house with the friendliest service in town! My two girls go crazy at the very mention of it. They too are treated very warmly. We took my husband for Fathers Day last year and he raved about the quiche, salad, and bread he had for lunch. So, not just tea and scones are delicious at the tea house!
Thank you Joanne for always making our experience at the tea house positive and enchanting!

I am long over due in writing this review. In 2005 on the weekend of Mother's Day I treated my mother (of course), daughter, 2 daughter-in-laws, and 4 grand-daughters to the finest tea party at the English Rose. This was the younger girls 1st Tea, but everyone had such a great time that this will become an annual event. I want to thank Joanne Gemmeill for such a lovely experience.

Your host is a truly Engish lady who definatly has the right to claim the finest tea room in the state, and I know my Devon double-clotted cream. Out of 5 stars we rated her 6 stars, A warm and inviting experince. Ihe combination of serving ladies who mollycoddle you, cozy atmosphere, delectable foods, to the delightful owners makes this the epitome of an 'English tea'.Very popular, recommend you call first.

The English Rose seems to have a wonderful variety of teas and good food, but I am unable to judge, having been informed after driving 25 miles that we would be unable to eat there due to lack of reservations. I was informed that the webpage did suggest making reservations. Upon returning home, I verified that reservations were 'strongly suggested,' but only on the 'contact us' link, not on the main page, menu, or location links. Three different staff members suggested that we move while they moved furniture and spread tablecloths before the fourth asked us if we had reservations and then apologized curtly for our inability to be seated that day. The website/reservation issue aside, I was less than impressed.

Your significant other may be eternally grateful for a visit with you to this extraordinary place. For those of you who wouldn't normally explore such a place, try this one with your love(r). Fine tea, unusual beauty and attention to detail, great food, and truly extraordinary service. A visit can transform your day.

I just got home from a fabulous time at the English Rose. My mother-in-law travels to the UK once a year, for the last several years; so she is familiar with “English” tea. She wanted to do something special for my 5yr olds birthday. What more fun than a tea party. Then English Rose was everything and more than we hoped for. Atmosphere is wonderful. Food excellent. When the “Nursery Tea” tray came out both the 5yr old and her 9 yr old sister gasped and beamed. My mother in law was VERY pleased to be able to treat her granddaughters to a REAL English tea. The drive is well worth it. We will defiantly be back!!

Loved it! We had my daughters 6th Birthday party there and the girls were treated like royalty. They had such a fantastic time eating the cookies and trying on hats. Thanks to Joanna, she offered us the patio so the girls could be girls. Unfortunately, the party came to a close much to early. Now I can't wait to make the trek across town to enjoy afternoon tea with the big girls.

I absolutely love The English Tea Room & Joanne is quite wonderful herself. The staff is equally wonderful as is the food. I host teas in my home & this is as lovely, friendly & relaxing as being in ones own home. I frequent The English Rose & always take friends & visiting family for such a delightful experience. Lingering is always such a treat here! Do try!

My mother has been taking me to tea for as long as I can remember. Now a debutante and mother myself I follow in this family tradition visiting tea rooms around the world. In all my travels, The English Rose is hands down our favorite! You can’t imagine our delight when my little girls and I dragged my husband into this delightful tea room! We each choose lovely tea hats from the dress up chest and sipped tea while enjoying the stunning British décor of ladylike things everywhere. When my little girl’s three-tiered 'tea party' arrived, her eyes were wide with wonder. She felt like a princess and so did I…it was a moment I will never forget. This is indeed a very special place where the food is fabulous and the memories last a lifetime. And you aren't still hungry when you leave! Her Royal Highness Joanne has an excellent staff that includes a celebrated staff, pastry chef, chef and bread baker! Thank you again, Joanne!

We have been to many places across the country for tea, and this was one of the absolute best experiences of all! The food that was served with the tea was delicious, beautifully prepared and presented on gorgeous delicate china; the scones were fabulous! The decor and service were also first rate. We will definitely recommend this to our friends. Looking forward to returning again.
