I can't say enough about the food here; it's simply wonderful! Chef Carol Hill obviously loves what she does because it shows. My husband still talks about the potato soup we had there. The quiche du jour is an excellent choice for a weekend brunch before or after shopping in Historic Gruene.
Since these visits were in the summer, and we ate outside, I of course had iced tea with my meals. I had a choice of plain, sweetened, or flavored (I don't remember what that was). The sweet tea was brewed with care and not bitter or 'stale' and some place's iced tea can taste. I have not yet tried the 'Afternoon Tea' that includes a choice of hot tea, tea sandwiches, scones, small tarts, cookies and chocolate dipped strawberries, though I certainly plan on it. I'll be sure to provide a separate review of that - and the available teas - when I do.
The River House Tea Room is tucked in a corner of Gruene and has a warm, cozy Texas home kind of feel to it when you walk up. I've been there a couple of times on pretty days an always sat outside. Despite being away outside, service was always attentive and friendly and the chef came out on one visit and talked to several of the guests.

I've never had a meal here that wasn't beyond excellent (and I've been here quite a few times)! Love the small muffins and house tea as well as the quiches and specials. Would recommend in a heartbeat!

Rude hostess, Server that does not know that sour cream is made from dairy! Chef and other kitchen help sets out at a table when there are still customers dining. Last but not least, tips are added to your check with out a customer's choice to tip for poor food and poor service. It is a kind of bait and switch. This is done so the employer does not have to make up the difference of wages if the server does not make the wages required by the state. Real Classy? Maybe for the crowd that does not get out much! Will not return.

This particular restaurant offers delicious food in a lovely atmosphere. However, it is not a Tea Room. You may order hot tea, just like you can order it any restaurant, however they do not have a tea service. I was extremely disappointed when I went to this establishment because I was very much looking forward to having a cream tea or high tea. If you want a tasty lunch visit this restaurant. If you want Tea, don't bother.

I must admit after reading the reviews for this tea room, I was a bit disappointed. Although the food was quite tasty, Afternoon Tea was not what one would expect. The tea was served with the tea bag remaining in the pot, and we were not informed of this. If you wanted more tea, they poured hot water over the same tea bag in the pot. The choices of tea were limited, and if you wanted to try another, there was an additional charge. For a cafe', this is a wonderful place to visit. For a tea room, it is not exactly what the name would lead one to believe.

Best of the best! Friendly staff, great food & even better desserts. Chef Carol even came out to chat with us. I just wish this place was closer to Dallas/Ft. Worth!

I have been frequenting this fine establishment for over 4 years. It is the most scrumptious food- and unlike many 'girly' tearooms which husbands won't go to because they'll be hungry when they leave, this is not the case at RHTR- the portions are more than enough and ever bite is delicious. In addition to a good tea selection, they have an excellent wine selection. It is a wonderful place for a romantic dinner or a fun lunch with friends. I love it!!

Very comfortable place with freshly prepared food. Nice atmosphere and friendly service.
Fantastic desserts too. My husband loves this place so while you'll see lots of ladies lunching here, many couples come for dinner on Friday and Saturday nights also. All around homey kind of place.

A friend told me about this tea room several years ago, now I am bringing other friends and we have never been disappointed. I have ordered many different items and all were wonderful. I wish I lived closer, I would go much more often. Very affordable.

The food is incredible, especially the taste and variety of the quiche and the desserts are homemade fresh and delicious this is a perfect place for a tea room after lunch you can fill your afternoon with antiques and shopping or listening to classic Texas honky tonk at the historic Gruene Hall.

A previous review was right that this is not a 'high tea' kind of tea room. I think the decor is pretty but not overly frilly. It is quiet with a nice ambiance and outstanding food. Although I hate to let out a good secret, try dinner on Friday or Saturday nights with a different menu. Very romantic. The prices are reasonable and I have never had a bad meal. My husband loves it as much as I do and he is an avid hunter and fisherman and man's man.

This is really a restaurant oriented to women rather than a tea room in the traditional sense - more of an iced tea and fancy salad place than a hot tea and white glove place. The decor is restaurant-feminine. Men are comfortable here, but it's mostly women.
The food is GREAT. In case you're wondering, it DOES make a difference that they have a real chef, and the prices are not hiked accordingly. I'm surprised every time I go that they haven't started charging more. The menu is interesting without being frightening to the cautious, and there's enough variety to suit the whole family.

I just called the River House to make a reservation to meet family from San Antonio for lunch on Saturday. We live in PA now & never miss an opportunity to dine at the Tea Room when we come into town. The food is superb, the staff friendly and the Tea Room dining experience a true delight.

We loved the wonderful dining evening we spent there. So much so we are planning our wedding around Chef Carol and her beautiful establishment.

Imagine walking into a friendly place where you can get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life...a place where a variety of tea is served alongside flavorful soups, fresh salads, filling sandwiches and topped of with your choice of dessert. The River House Tea Room is one of few places that does everything well. Stay for dinner on Friday and Saturday nights.
Not only does Carol and her staff present delicious food, they are also some of the friendliest people that my husband and I met while living in New Braunfels this past year.

A message from the chef: Thank you for your honest opinions of the tea room.I love hearing from customers and will make improvments on scones and loose teas for service. Keep me on my teas so that we will be successful in serving you. Sincerely, Chef Carol Hill, CEC

My sister and I recently visited for Afternoon Tea. It was lovely. The food was delicious and beautifully presented. The loose tea selection left something to be desired. The service was attentive, but not intrusive. Enjoyed the atmosphere with fabric and mini-lights on a grapevine. Scones could be improved. These criticisms are small in the big picture. I would definitely go back.
