My sister and I went to The Purple Door for her birthday at the end of July. We both thought it was the nicest tea we had been to so far. We liked everything that was on the menu and thought the room was decorated quite nicely. Although we live in Flint my sister said she would like to come back again.

My friend and I just got back from a delicious full tea at the Purple Door tea room in Ferndale. The room was charming, the service excellent, and the food absolutely delicious. The soup to start the meal was the best Italian wedding soup I've ever had. There was a large assortment of little sandwiches and taste bites. I ate so much I took my desert home and just finished a tiny apricot tart. I live an hour away and it is worth the drive. I'll be back. Lynnet 7/5/14

My grand-daughter and myself had a grandma and me luncheon here yesterday and had a wonderful time. The food was outstanding! They will accommodate any diet restrictions. My grand-daughter has to have gluten free and everything was delicious! She was so excited because even the dessert was gluten free and tasted heavenly. Christine and Matthew treated us so special. We would highly recommend 'The Purple Door Tea Room'.

The tea room is a feast for the eyes. The decor is beautiful and interesting - each table setting being unique and inviting. Crystal and silver and china glistened everywhere. The food was both delicious and filling. We had the Rose Tea and enjoyed every flavorful mouthful. The tea was hot and savory with a lovely selection to please every pallet. We will come again..

From the momement you walk through the doors, you know that you are embarking on a wonderful, relaxing and stimulating experience. Your senses are awakened and delighted by the sensual aromas and eclectic artistry of the gallery as well as the one-of a-kind treasures found in the boutique. The beautiful decor of the tearoom is breath taking, and the gracious and friendly hostesses are the key to making this such a remarkable experience. This tea room is a real gem, and offers the perfect setting for any occasion.

We visited, The Purple Door Tearoom, this past week w/a few friends. It was our first visit to the tearoom. It was everything our friends told us about. The room is decorated in hues of purple & beautiful flowers. The china is set differently on each table. The atmosphere is so relaxing. We did get to experience a tea that I never had before-Pear. Its was very good, along w/the wonderful tea sandwhichs, soup and the dessert was delicious. We also enjoyed the shopping.

My numerous visits to the infamous Purple Door Tearoom have proven to be more than a relaxing and stimulating social experience. Education of the art of taking tea has taken a front seat. The tea literature that garnishes the laced tablecloths, colorful books containing tea prose and poetry, and recipes found in upscale Tea magazines await your perusing while selecting your choice of tea.

A very charmful place. I would love to have more education on the type of teas that were offered. Although the room is rather small, the atmosphere is very nice. Although, you really would not know it was there.
I brought my husband and daughter, and they really enjoyed the experience.

The first time I had an opportunity to visit the tea room was during the 'International Women's Day Jazz Tea'. I had the best time. The setting in the tea room, the food and the entertainment was great. Infact, I am attending the next jazz tea and I am bringing 11 people with me. This tea room is a hidden treasure in the city of Detroit, MI. I highly recommend everyone to visit this great treasure.

Me & my husband went to the 'International Women's Day Jazz Tea Luncheon' and it was wonderful, the luncheon food was very good and the entertainment by a Jazz saxophonist 'Duane Parham was wonderful what a treat. Such a great ideal, Jazz & Tea. We're looking forward for the next one.

I had some friends from LA last week, and I treated them to this lovely tearoom. This was our first visit and we enjoyed it. The variety of food was a very interesting experience for ones taste buds. It wasn't just the tearoom, it is also the art gallery and boutique, that makes the trip worth it.

Christine and Percious,
Nikki and I have just returned to work after a leisurely afternoon tea luncheon with you both. The sacred space that you have created for spirits who love to “tea” is extraordinary. Only kindred spirits can fully appreciate the breathing space that is the Purple Door. My cousin and I are two such wise women.
Experiencing a tea room for the first time is like the anticipation of opening a present that you’ve just received. This present did not disappoint.
I’ve come to know that each tea room has their own unique personality and flavor, their own unique intention…and the rule of thumb is to arrive a blank slate, take a deep breath and experience what has been created for you.
You pass through an art gallery on the first level. The art pieces and gift items immediately brighten your spirit. Who doesn’t love the combination of shopping and tea! You climb the stairway and in the corner of Percious’ Something Different Boutique -- you see it tucked in the corner…The Purple Door. We’ve arrived. My cousin Nikki and I walk through the door, exhaled and were so grateful that we’d come.
The tables for two lent themselves to intimacy and conversation, yet it’s easy to see that if your party is more than two, your friends would still be close enough for comfort.
Thank you for the urban pleasure, right in the heart of Detroit. One day, when the daytime hustle and bustle has returned to Downtown -- you may have missed the opportunity. Make time and reserve your tea time now. It’s a tea location worth sharing.
Thank you for letting us linger.
With gratitude, Cousins Carol Moore and Nikki Moss (April 2, 2008)

My Red Hat Chapter gals have been to this wonderful and delightful Tea Room for the last three years. We make this our Annual Tea event. This is our FAVORITE TEA ROOM of all the tea rooms in the Metro Detroit area and we have been to many.

6 of us had tea at the Purple Door Tea Room yesterday and it couldn't have been nicer. Very easy to find (exactly across the street from where Hudson's used to be) with 2 hour free parking on the street. Tea choices were English & Peach (we liked both), soup was Portuguese potato/leek with banana brandy, lentils & vegetables (fab), salad had a raspberry champagne viniagrette (also fab), tea sandwiches course was 9 (2-3 bite sized) 'sandwiches' (including crab & smoked shrimp served on a slice of tomato, 2 different crackers with different spreads/toppings, a tiny quiche, a phyllo triangle stuffed with mushrooms, etc.), and for dessert a slice of chocolate cake served on a bed of sliced strawberries with 2 scoops of ice cream. We'll be back!

Ialso attended the Purple Door Tea Room this past weekend. I noticed the group on the lovely antique couch. Four ladies sat together and pulled tables together with another 2 within arms length. I must say I was shocked by their comments about service and water. We were served the same water, it was fine. I have been to the tea room 3 times and found the attention to service and our comfort outstanding. I have brought a total of 19 friends and family & we have always had great food, wonderful service and attention to the details that make for a wonderfuldining experience. The table are set up for tea-for-two but the room is arranged so that groups of six or four or eight can sit within arms length of one another and comfortably hold conversations. It certainly is not cafeteria style. We also know that tea cups are removed from the table for refills so that old/cold tea can be removed and fresh hot tea poured. Some tea rooms pour hot tea into cold cups. We love the tea room. That's why we keep returning.

We went to the Purple door this past weekend. The room was beautifully decorated and such a peaceful atmosphere on first impressions. However, we were served food before any mention of Tea and from my past experience I know this is a big No NO. We had to ask for water over and over again. I realize why we had to ask so many time once we recieved it. It really tasted like poison. The help seemed pleasant enough but in my opinion weren't trained for waiting on people. I wouldn't return due to the service and the water. If you are going to a tea you shouldn't have to be sitting on the edge of your seat trying to get a cup of Tea. Best of luck

Our group of ladies attended a tea this past weekend, and first I will comment on the things we liked: The décor was very charming, and the food was delicious. But there were a few issues that should be noted. First, the setup of the room/tables is not accommodating to a group larger than two, so we felt the seating to carry on a conversation among our entire group was awkward. Second we weren’t served any tea until after we had already finished our first course, and instead of going around the room with a teapot for refills, the server would take each cup and saucer out of the room one at a time to refill it. This process was so time consuming that we hated to ask for more tea. Also we asked three times for water and when the water was finally served it was so terribly rancid both in taste and smell that we were afraid to drink it. The service wasn’t terrible, but we did feel a little let down, due to some details that seemed overlooked. Overall we had a pleasant afternoon, but I wouldn’t return with group larger than two next time.

The Purple Door Tea Room was recommended by my friend who visits tea rooms all over the country. I thought she was exaggerating when she told me about this one - but whoa Nellie, this one is a blockbuster. I loved everything about it from the exquisiet decor to the scrumptious food. My friend did not exaggerate. We all loved it. Thanks Liz!!

My daughter was here from Atlanta, Ga, for her birthday, so my husband and I treated her to a tea luncheon. A co-worker suggested the 'Purple Door Tea Room, since I mentioned I wanted to do something different for her birthday. It was breathtaking, the tables are so elegantly done with fine china, crystal and lovely linen. The menu that day was delicious. We were told they change day to day. The seating is set-up for a intimate feel. The hostess was so gracious, she gave my daughter a gift for her birthday. Even my husband enjoyed his self. We wanted to shop, the boutique and craft gallery, but i will return with my girlfriends and make it an Ladies Afternoon out. I didn't leave without making reservations. real nice to see in the city and more so downtown.

What a wonderful experience, we had our Red Hatters tea outing and we had a lovely time. The ladies and I dressed up victorian and we fit in with the decor and enjoyed everything the food, the hospitality and service. WE had a ball shopping in the boutique and crafts gallery. What a great afternoon.

This experience for my tea lunch was so tranquil and relaxing, as stated in another review, just the right lighting, music and ambience and gracious service by owner was refreshing. The atmosphere is not a restraraunt feel, it has a feel of fine dining at a special affair. I feel you get so much more than tea, an escape, even if it is only for a little while. The desserts are just sinful. The presentation of food has such artistry.

This lovely tearoom is located on the second floor of an art gallery, and I must admit that upon first arriving I wasn't sure what I was walking into, but at the top of the stairs nestled in the far corner is intimate size room painted a vibrate purple of course. The ambiance is charming with each table dressed in linens and lace. The china is an enchanting assortment of mix & match, soft window covers let in just the right amount of light, and the soothing music which fills the room sets a tone for relaxation. As mentioned in another review the food does have a gourmet twist, and while not everything suited my personal taste, the variety and presentation was excellent. The owner and staff were kind, and we felt we received a fine value for the cost. I would definitely return again.

My experience was so very special at the Purple Door Tea Room. The room os beautifully decorated. I loved the view of the people mover going by. It reminded be of being on a special retreat. The food, we enjoyed, because they offer more than your traditional tea menu, it has a gourmet twist to it. We had a Wild Rice & Mushroom Soup, Strawberry, blueberry & fig viniagerette herb green salad, tea sandwich's, chicken pasta salad, and for dessert we had chocolate Gaunache Torte w/ raspberry sorbet and Lemon double cream pudding w/fresh strawberries. My friends and I was treated so speical, the service was so refreshing and wonderful. They also had a great boutique outside the tearoom, with loads of wonderful things. They whole venue was great, seeing the Fine Art & Craft Gallery. along with the PuppetArt Theatre. Everyone was so nice. This is truly a hidden gem in downtown Detroit, that must be experienced. I highly recommend it. The experience will make you forget any troubles or stress. We also found out they have a Massage Therapist available. It that a treat or what. I plan on making this something me and friends treat ourselves on a regular basis.

We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves but for High Tea experts this is not a traditional High Tea. More like lunch, with a choice of 2 teas (Earl Grey and Apple Cranberry the day we went). Atmosphere is whimsical and we enjoyed the variety of food offered. The owner was very pleasant and service was excellent.
